Reading 1 Peter 2, and struck by the opening verse. "So put away all malice and all guile and insincerity and envy and all slander." (1 Peter 2:1 RSV). I find myself too often the perpetrator of sarcasm and guile, especially in discussing public policy anonymously on the internet. I pray to help me overcome that weakness.

Veterans Day 2019
Politics: The impeachment inquiry goes public this week, with Adam Schiff holding open hearings with testimony from several former White House and State Department officials.
Sports: On Friday night, the Navy men's basketball team was impressive against an inexperienced East Carolina squad, winning in the nightcap of the Veterans' Classic doubleheader in Alumni Hall. ON Saturday I traveled down to Clemson to watch the Mids women's basketball team against the Tigers. After a lackluster first half, when the Mids trailed by 6 at halftime, they stormed back with great defensive intensity, pulling out a 65-52 win. They outscored the Tigers 40-20 in the 2nd half, and had 22 steals in the game. To cap off the weekend, on Sunday the Navy women's soccer team came from behind to beat Army 2-1 in the Patriot League championship match, sending the Mids to the NCAA tournament.

Several days' worth
Didn't blog for a few days. Highlights:
1. Bluegrass legend Dr. Ralph Stanley died. His music lives on.
2. The UK voted in a referendum to leave the European Union, resulting in global market crashes and political uncertainty. In related news, England had its own Brexit from Euro 2016 at the hands of Iceland in what is one of the biggest upsets ever in international soccer.
3. Chile beat Argentina in penalties after 120 minutes of scoreless soccer to win Copa America Centenario.
4. USNA Grad Billy Hurley III won his first PGA tour event at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda. He now gets a 2-year tour exemption, and qualifies for the British Open, the Masters, and several other invitational championship events.

House Democrats ended their sit-in on the House floor. Led by civil rights legend John Lewis (D-GA), the Democrats were protesting Speaker Paul Ryan's refusal to bring gun safety legislation to the floor for an up or down vote. The Speaker prevailed in adjourning for the Independence Day break, with the House scheduled to return on July 5.
It was referendum day in the UK, with voters deciding whether to stay in the European Union, or leave the economic alliance (BREXIT).
The Supreme Court tied 4-4 in a decision (US v Texas) that in effect blocks President Obama's plan to halt deportations for some 4 million undocumented immigrants. The administration plan would have granted some legal status to those with clean criminal records. The practical effect is to maintain the status quo ante, with the administration continuing to use its prosecutorial discretion in deportations.
In another decision (Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin), the Supremes affirmed a lower court decision that endorsed the University's use of racial preferences in admissions. This was a blow to anti-affirmative action proponents. In a third noteworthy decision, the court ruled that states could impose penalties for refusal to take a breathalyzer test, but not for refusal to take a blood test, without a warrant (Birchfield v North Dakota, Bernard v. Minnesota, Beylund v. Levi).
Finally, Ben Simmons of LSU was the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, with Duke's Brandon Ingram going 2nd to the LA Lakers.
